Music Gift of the Week: Logic - "Young, Broke, and Infamous"

Submitted by: Sabrina Phillips - Logic aka Young Sinatra was the musical present for me this week in the form of his 2010 released mixtape “Young, Broke, and Infamous”. This hip-hop mixtape is a new favorite of mine and was recommended to me by the same person who told me to listen to Gambino’s “Because The Internet”. Now with that recommendation record I knew I had to take this guy’s advice and listen to some of Logic’s work, and boy am I glad that I did.

This mixtape is so classic. Each track maintains the same approach and flawless execution throughout the entire body of work. A poetic and soulful hip-hop sound is present in each track. The topics aren’t anything you haven’t heard about before, it’s the usual, being in love, being broke, and the come up. What sets this mixtape apart is the lyricism and the beats. Logic’s flow is so poetic and all his lyrics are real. The kind of lyrics we all can relate to, the struggle of growing up in circumstances that were hard to bare and the determination needed to fight for something better for ourselves. Logic also has some of the dopest beats to accompany his sick lyrics on this mixtape. When I listen to Logic’s beats I’m reminded of Nas and Neo-soul (think Erykah Badu or Musiq Soulchild). There are very few things I love more than a smooth hip-hop instrumental that makes you bop your head, so this mixtape right here was a necessity for me to listen to straight through. This mixtape also has one of my favorite things, sampling. I love when an artist can take someone else’s song or a piece of dialogue and incorporate it into a track without losing the essence of the music or instead enhancing it.

There were a couple tracks I could’ve done without but considering this is a 19 track mixtape and there were only 2 I wasn’t really feeling, this is still a solid release. Along with those tracks there were some that took this record to a whole new level like “Young Sinatra” and “Backpack” and those are what I’m gonna recommend you guys listen to along with the rest of this mixtape. The mixtape is available for free download on DatPiff, so check it out below.
