1. My Life
For me when I’m listening to an album/mixtape I need the first track to grab me. Even if I keep listening if the first track bored me, I’ll only be half paying attention. That’s why I love this track, it grabbed me and didn’t let go. The song maintains a slow pace throughout while presenting itself as a buildup verse. On the song he is accompanied by a lovely piano instrumental and that’s my favorite part of this short song.
2. Kings and Queens (Throw It Up)
This is one of my favorites on the mixtape. SoMo manages to shine vocally towards the end of the song amongst the heavy bass. It makes you want to dance and gives you a good idea of the sound Somo is going for.
3. Oh, Hell
This is the night after song. In King and Queens he has the time of his life and in this track he’s singing “head spinning out of control”. This song talks about what artists usually don’t talk about, the morning after the turn up aka the hangover. I wouldn’t recommend you listen to this when you have a hangover though, the beat in the chorus may give you a headache. If you’re sober, you’ll love it.
4. Touch The Sky
This song gave me a shock when the beat dropped. This song is the one you’re going to groove to and I personally love the lyrics. Also SoMo doesn’t use autotune on this track which I really appreciated as this mixtape uses way too much of it considering he has a good voice.
5. Dreams
I’m a sucker for an acoustic piano so I love the first verse of this song. The problem with this song is how many time he says“this must be a dream” is repeated. After that the track goes into Somo preparing for a shower and then taking a phone call.
6. The Only One
Based on the lyrics in this track I’m guessing this is what SoMo would be saying to the girl he talked to on the phone in Dreams. On this track like a lot of the others SoMo relies weightily on a heavy bass that overpowers his voice once the chorus comes in. If this was the only song like this on the album I would like it much more but by this track, a buildup with repeated lyrics to a heavy bass chorus where Somo is barely heard has gotten pretty old.
7. Letters
To me this song is one of the better songs. The chorus resembles a mesh of a Nsync early 2000’s song with some 2009 Bieber influences. It’s catchy and like a lot of the other songs is easy to dance to. I think I appreciated it mostly because of the lack of the buildup and dubstep chorus.
8. ...Again
This is my favorite song, hands down. Most likely because I like SoMo the most when he slows it down. Unfortunately this is the shortest song at 1 minutes and 12 seconds. Nonetheless it’s a good track, Somo sounds great and the beat is good but doesn’t steal the shine from the vocals or lyrics.
9. Hearts of The Divine
Personally I think the mixtape should've closed with this track. It wraps up the mixtape nicely and has a good message. It's one of the more mellow tracks and though Somo doesn't shine vocally on the track it's still a good song. It also has the best song title on the mixtape.
10. Rush
This is without a doubt my least favorite song on the album, to me the song is very one-dimensional. Also the song features heavy auto tune throughout which personally I don't think SoMo needs, it doesn't do his voice any good. The lyrics in this song are nothing spectacular and the beat sounds like something from 2010 that never made it on Britney Spears “Femme Fatale” album. Basically it didn't make since for this mixtape and definitely wasn't worthy of being the closing track.
Overall it’s a good record. Since it’s SoMo’s debut mixtape I feel as though it should’ve been more dynamic, but hopefully the album will be better. This is the kind of mixtape I’d play in my car and wouldn’t skip a track because there’s no real reason to but probably wouldn’t have on replay just because. I wish he had put his first two singles Ride and Show Off on the mixtape since they are better than any song on the mixtape but I do think they would’ve been out of place amongst the electronic songs. Give this mixtape a listen and let me know what you think.
