EP Review: Aubrey O'Day - "Between Two Evils"
It's been 5 years of dealing with industry drama and project delays, but Danity Kane starlet Aubrey O'Day has finally released her debut solo project entitled "Between Two Evils". After a long run on Celebrity Apprentice and a successful reality show of her own entitled All About Aubrey, Ms. O'Day is giving her Aubtourage what they've been waiting for. The 9 track EP is extremely personal and gives listeners Aubrey's perspective of a recent past relationship that ended badly. The EP was released independently through Aubrey's Heart On My Sleeve label and jumped to #1 on the iTunes Dance chart before it was even released. Check out the track by track review below.
1. DJT (Intro) (9/10)
The EP starts off with a personal track, most of which is snippets of the last phone call Aubrey had with her ex lover, who inspired the EP. Aubrey shows how vulnerable she is to listeners as she asks her her former beau to tell her that he loves her one last time, which he hesitantly does, but never contacts her again. This track makes you question what was going through Aubrey's mind and heart after the breakup, and the rest of the EP gives you the answers.
2. Unchoose You (9.5/10)
Aubrey said herself that this is her favorite track from the EP, and it's easy to see why. During this track, Aubrey wonders how to get over her ex and move on with her life. The lyrics in this song can apply to anyone who's split with their significant other and wondered why they ever had feelings for the person. Unchoose You everything that great track needs, great productions, relatable lyrics, and great vocals.
3. Love Me When You Leave (10/10)
Love Me When You Leave is a definite club banger. Being the first full on dance track on the EP, it sets the standards high for the rest of the tracks. From the verses, the chorus and the beat breakdown, this track is flawless, that's all that needs to be said.
4. Let Me Lay (9.5/10)
Let Me Lay starts off with one of my favorite lyrics "How big a gun would it take to shoot the sun out the sky so daylight won't take you away?". As the lyric alludes, this track features Aubs singing of a lover who exists only in her dreams at night; when she wakes up, the reality of her situation hits her hard. "Reality is overrated if all we share is only in my dreams" she sings. The chorus of this track is to die for as Aubrey shows her vocal range and stays consistent throughout.
5. Hurts So Good (9/10)
This track is another heavy dance track where Aubrey shows her vulnerability and admits that she knows her guy is no good for her, but she doesn't care. "You're the shit, but you ain't shit, and I still can't get enough" Aubrey sings over the pulsating beat. I could definitely see this track as a single.
6. Before I Drown (10/10)
Here's a track that Aubrey has been performing at her live shows for a while, and that fans have been waiting to hear in it's HQ glory. Aubrey uses the idea of drowning out at sea alone to metaphorically describe how she felt in her relationship. The lyrics show that she felt like she was purposefully lured into the situation, only to be left to suffer. Before I Drown is more of a pop/rock track bordering the vibe of Aubrey's single Wrecking Ball that was released last year and Aubrey sounds right at home singing her heart over the heavy drums and guitar.
7. Second Call (Interlude) (9.5/10)
This is where Aubrey brings out her sultry side and things get raunchy. This track has more of an R&B feel and Aubrey's vocals are on point, as they are throughout the entire EP. With lines like "Hope she's still at work 'til you get me off" and "Sittin' in my bed with my tit out", Aubrey shows that she wanted to be raw and honest with listeners. The last minute or so of the track consists of a sexy phone call between Aubrey and an... old friend, in which Aubrey admits that she may miss the fun they used to have and orders hit to shut up and make her c... well, you know. Overall, this is one of my favorite tracks for it's honesty, lyrics, production.
8. Devil & Me (8.5/10)
This is the one track that focuses on the honesty of being famous and not about Aubrey's past relationship, and this track is definitely a standout one for it's lyrics. Throughout the tracks, Aubrey explains to viewers that fame isn't as glamorous as some people may think it is and paints a picture as to how. One of the most powerful lines in the song is: "There's no escape, this street's one way, coming to a dead end, covered up in dead men, wish I learned a lesson, would've never got in". This song can serve as a cautionary tale to anyone who's thinking of getting into the industry and Aubrey's controlled vocals lend to the emotional aspect of the song.
9. Outro (8/10)
The outro of the EP has more of an R&B feel as Aubrey sings over a slow beat and the harmonies are great. "I can't deny being seduced by evil, so as much as it burns, I'll sit in between and wait for my next turn. Between two evils." she says as the outro comes to a close.
Overall Rating (9.5/10)
Overall, this EP is amazing and definitely worth a purchase. Head over to iTunes and pick it up now
